FAIRMONT, W.Va. — At its regular City Council meeting on Jan. 14, Fairmont City Council approved the acquisition of the former U.S. Machine facility. This purchase will allow the City’s Public Works department to expand its footprint and provide our employees with some much needed breathing room.
“Our guys have been making this facility on Minor Avenue work for years, but it’s always been a tight fit for us,” Director of Public Work Ron Miller said. “When we get our winter trucks in the garage, plus other City vehicles we service, there’s not much space. This new building is exactly what we need.”
The new facility adds 36,000 square-feet of usable space for our Public Works to use. The purchase is being completed for $665,000 and the property is fully renovated and turnkey-ready and has undergone an inspection by the City’s Building Inspector.
“Public Works is the backbone of our municipal operations, and this acquisition is necessary for us to continue to provide the best possible services we can to our constituents,” City Manager Travis Blosser said. “Not only does this improve the functionality of our Public Works, but it contributes directly to our broader goal of improving the Beltline Neighborhood.”
With the current footprint in which Public Works operates, we are split between using existing space for storage and staging operations. In the winter months, having space to stage our snow removal vehicles in a temperature-controlled area is vital to ensure a smooth service. The new facility will primarily store supplies and vehicles, freeing up space in our current garage for staging operations.
Attached to this release is a map detailing the acquired property compared to the current footprint.
