Smoke detectors are required to be installed per manufacturer's instructions in each location as follows:
Inside each bedroom
On each floor including basements and/or garages
Outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms
Violations
Smoke detector violations must be corrected on the same day as the inspection. Failure to correct such violation by 4 p.m. of the day of the inspection will result in that unit and/or the entire building being vacated and condemned as an unsafe structure. (2003 International Code Council International Property Maintenance Code PM-108.1.1 "Unsafe Structure" - not providing minimum safeguards to protect or warn occupants in the event of a fire.)
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon Monoxide Detectors are required outside of each bedroom.
